Fidget String
Years before fidget spinners I knitted a few of these strings for the fidgety kids in my life. This one belongs to my nephew, who uses it often. He wraps it several times around his wrist as a bracelet, so it passes as not a toy in school.
These fidget strings are easier to make than they look. It's basically an I-cord, except every so often I played with the stitches. In one section I purled every other stitch, in another I knit a row then purled a row. The idea is to vary the texture for different places to touch. I added random buttons and charms that have his initials, again looking to vary the texture. I put a ball at one end and a loop at the other so it can be worn around the neck or wound around the wrist.
Each one I made was unique to the child I made it for. I think my nephew got the most out of his string. He told me he pretends each of the buttons turn on a different special power. He even brought it to me to fix when one of the buttons fell off. My own son used his quite a bit too, but as he was older, he grew out of it quicker.
