Autumn Shawl

This shawl is one of my first projects when I got back into knitting as an adult. The large holes on the border was what drew me to the project. This predates my KnittingSmall mantra, so it's bigger than most of my current projects.

I used the “Gambel Shawl” pattern in the Winter 2013 issue of Knitscene magazine. I bought a thinner yarn than the pattern called for, so I doubled it. I had never seen a double yarn over pattern before, so this was a lot of fun. By the time I got to the end of the pattern, however, it was much smaller than I wanted (and smaller than the picture), so I added another round of the 2x4 ribbing and the border. Then I put a picot edging on it since I had just learned it and wanted to practice.

I can’t tell you much about the yarn I used, except bought it at a knitting store rather than a big box store, and it contains some silk. I was making it for ME, so I figured I’d splurge. Yes, the project called for more than one or two skeins, but this was before I got my “keep it small” mantra. In fact, I wound up with an extra skein, which I used to make wrist warmers. The rest wound up in my yarn stash, which eventually became a pair of pedicure socks for my sister.
